Volterra

foto enrico sabatini Volterra, dominates from high all the valley of Cecina river. It is 550 metres high and it is considered as an art jewel because it was inhabitated since etruscan age and it is rich in roman, medioeval and Reinassance traces. Isolated, but in a strategic position and nearly equidistant from the main centres of the region, Volterra has always kept its peculiar fisionomy, including however all the different traditions of Tuscany.

Historical informations

foto enrico sabatini The current aspect of the city is the medioeval one. During the medioeval Age were built numerous houses-towers and the main public buildings enclosed within the walls still existing. Nonetheless the village reveals also the presence of other ancient civilizations: from the etruscan to the roman one are testifyed not only by the ancient walls and monuments but also in the numerous museums of the town. Etruscan are the walls, the imponent arch, the only one still existing and intact, the tombs and the numerous and precious archeological founds in Museo Etrusco Guarnacci, one of the oldest museum in Europe, where are Ombra della Sera, whose profile is really unique, and the beautiful jewels, finely worked. Romans are Acropolis and Thetre, as well as a part of the walls.
